Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about your Berkey water filtration system

How often should I replace the Black Berkey Purification Elements?

Each pair of Black Berkey elements lasts for up to 6,000 gallons. We recommend replacing them every 2-5 years depending on your daily water consumption.

Does the Berkey system remove fluoride?

The standard Black Berkey elements remove a significant amount of fluoride, but for 97% reduction, we recommend adding the Berkey PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Reduction Elements.

How do I know if my filters are working correctly?

You can perform a simple 'Red Food Color Test' to verify that your system is purifying water as intended. Detailed instructions are included in your manual.

Can I filter softened water through my Berkey?

We do not recommend filtering softened water as the salt can clog the pores of the purification elements and shorten their lifespan.

Do I need to prime the filters before use?

Yes, new filters must be primed to flush out manufacturing dust and air. This ensures the water flows efficiently through the microporous membranes.

Is the Berkey system BPA-free?

Absolutely. All My Berkey systems are constructed from high-quality, food-grade 304 stainless steel and BPA-free components.
